Almost everyone in countries like the UK, US, Canada, New Zeeland and Australia and so on should have at least heard of the world famous Sci-Fi TV series Doctor Who from the BBC! Thanks to the return of the show in 2005 following a 15yr pause, DW is as popular as ever with shows being broadcasted on the international Science fiction channel and even on United States TV channels in addition to the BBC’s broadcasts.
DW all began in November 1963 when it’s 1st episode aired on television taking the Doctor & his companions back into the past where they aided some cavemen to use fire for the first time. Taking into account the totally new series DW is currently the longest running Science fiction show of all time! Star Trek happens to be the second longest running Science fiction serial of all time having started in 1966 with stories being produced up in to only a few years ago.
During the seventies the BBC expanded DW onto the audio median making the first Doctor Who Audio books. The 1st releases were mostly soundtracks from the TV shows with linking narration by the Drs. It wasn’t long before the BBC decided to take the audio releases to the next level by releasing audio book episodes only for Audio release.
To add to this the BBC began making radio stories, again with past Doctors who had played in the show, these stories were also made available in Audiobook format. Another great use the BBC have found for audio with Doctor Who is the re-creation of old episodes that had been lost. There exist Audios from the very first series all the way up to the most recent serial with David Tennent and even Sarah Jane and Torchwood Audios.
In today’s world audio is even more popular than ever thanks to MP3 players. With multitasking becoming more and more an important part of our lives it’s not surprising that Audio sales for both DW and in general have augmented. Another great factor about audio titles is that they are often narrated by their original actors, which really adds to the whole experience.
The way things stand right now it looks like DW and its spin-off serial torchwood and the Sarah Jane adventures are doing really well so things look good for fans to be able to enjoy them for a number of years to come.
